Blissful Mozart

Multimedia on violin
23”H x 8¼”W x 9”D

Inspiration Concert:
Mozart, Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622
Julian Bliss, clarinet
Karen May, bagpipes
Tomas Lozano, Hurdy Gurdy

This concert puts Mozart’s music in context with his time and peers—both friends and rivals. The gallery thought this concert conjured up a splintered or fractured feeling, which brought to mind Mary’s multimedia work premised on the wabi-sabi philosophy of acknowledging breakage and transience as part of a greater beauty.
Mary immediately fastened on the word “tension” and pointed out it is the tension between dark and light, colors and textures that makes art, just as the tension between the composers of Mozart’s time were part of the environment that bore his greatness.
Mary’s piece manifests contrast and tension through her use of strong elements on the delicate violin that she visually divided into light and dark halves. She includes her signature medium of broken glass along with a wire and metal sculptural element evoking Mozart’s whimsical and wild persona in the fray of contrasts. A clarinet emerges from the creative struggle, signifying its “blissful” resolution.

Mary’s established career has journeyed from realism to her renowned dimensional abstractions extravagantly incorporating brilliant metal, glass and resin media in soulfully messaged works all based upon the unification of fractured and disparate media that summates a more beautiful reality. Mary immediately fastened on the spirit of this concert, identifying the “tension” between fracture and unification as elemental to the continuum of creativity.
